Commerce Bank CEO to be Honored by UTEP with 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award
Commerce Bank President & CEO Ignacio Urrabazo, Jr. has been selected by the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and its alumni association to receive the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award. Urrabazo will be recognized for his outstanding achievements, dedication, integrity and hard work at an award ceremony on Oct. 19 as part of the homecoming week activities. Past award honorees include former NASA Astronaut Dr. John D. Olivas, retired U.S. Army Major General James P. Maloney, and former Chairman and President of BP America, Inc. Robert A. Malone.
Urrabazo graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration from UTEP in 1970 and in 1983 joined Commerce Bank, a subsidiary of International Bancshares Corporation in Laredo. He has used his regional banking success to become one of the leading authorities in the U.S. on minority and small business banking. Through his leadership during his tenure, he grew the bank from an idea in 1983 to a $560 million enterprise in 2012.
Urrabazo also serves as chair-elect of the Texas Bankers Association, is a member of the FDIC Advisory Committee on Community Banking, and has been chairman of the National Bankers Association and Minbanc Foundation, which represent and support minority banks.
