(July 8, 2013) Zapata, Texas – IBC Bank-Zapata CEO Renato Ramirez was honored July 8 by the Zapata County Commissioners Court for his arduous, 12-year effort in developing and emplacing the Tejano Monument on state capitol grounds. The monument, unveiled March 2012 on the south lawn of the Texas capitol, is the largest of its kind on any state capitol grounds and honors the contributions of Texas’ early Spanish American settlers and their descendants.
Ramirez, who chaired the fundraising committee consisting of a group of Texas business, community and educational leaders, was instrumental in the monument’s conception, capitalization and completion, raising $1.3 million from private donors.
“The Tejano Monument is a touchstone for all Texans, of all races and cultures, who take pride in the state and its roots,” Ramirez said. “We hope the millions of early Tejano settler descendants feel as proud as I do of this symbolic masterpiece.”
The Tejano Monument is seen by the more than 1 million people who visit the Texas State Capitol each year. Five bronze plaques surround the monument and tell the story of the Tejano experience from the 1500s to present times. Zapata County Judge Joe Rathmell also recognized Ramirez for having recently been named Mr. South Texas 2014 for the 117th Washington’s Birthday Celebration. The Mr. South Texas title is presented to a deserving individual who has made a significant and lasting contribution to the growth and development of Laredo and the South Texas region.
“Mr. Ramirez has forever impacted Zapata, the Brush Country, South Texas and beyond. His humanitarian and philanthropic efforts have improved our quality of life and made a meaningful difference to countless individuals in our community,” Rathmell said.
Ramirez’s impact on regional development includes generous philanthropic work extending from Zapata to Laredo and across the border into Mexico. He has constructed a golf course for the Zapata community and made significant donations to an orphanage in Ciudad Mier in Mexico, Mary Help of Christians School in Laredo, Harmony Academy of Science in Laredo, and Sacred Heart Orphanage in Laredo. He also established scholarship programs at Laredo Community College and funded a $1 million dollar scholarship endowment at Texas A & M International University. He contributed to the National Hispanic Institute, and made significant donations to the Zapata Boys and Girls Club.
Martin High School recently inducted him into their Tiger Legends and Laredo Community College has awarded him a Meritorious Service Award. In October 2012, Ramirez was named to a three-year term on the KLRN-TV board of directors. KLRN is a public television station in San Antonio, Texas that is operated by the Alamo Public Telecommunications Council (APTC). The station is a member of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and also serves as the PBS member station for the Laredo, Texas market.
Ramirez will be celebrated February 22, 2014 at the illustrious Mr. South Texas Luncheon, to be held at the Laredo Country Club and attended each year by dignitaries and honored guests from the United States and Mexico. The Washington’s Birthday Celebration was recently ranked as one of the Top 100 Events in North America by the American Bus Association (ABA) and will take place January 23 – February 24, 2014.
