(April 18, 2013) LAREDO, Texas - IBC Bank Chairman and CEO Dennis Nixon was recognized as the sole recipient of the Laredo Chamber of Commerce “Visionary Award” on Wednesday, April 17 at the 2013 Vision Economic Outlook Conference. The Chamber has sponsored the conference since 1989 to provide a forum for business people to discuss relevant economic issues and present new initiatives for Laredo and Webb County. It established the Visionary Award in 2010 to recognize individuals whose contributions have made a mark on the economic development of the region. The 2013 Vision Economic Outlook Conference was held at Texas A&M International University.
“I have deep roots in Laredo, Webb County, and South Texas and am honored to lead IBC as we positively impact the economic health of the region,” Nixon said. “I am humbled that my vision and leadership have been recognized, and I look forward to a bright future for our community.”
Dennis Nixon is widely recognized as a leading banking authority and executive in the U.S. Having joined IBC in 1975, he is credited with the consistent growth of International Bancshares Corporation and International Bank of Commerce. He was instrumental in the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement and is actively involved in economic development between the U.S. and Mexico. Nixon has been recognized with the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame Award, the Paul Harris Fellow Award given by Rotary International for outstanding community service, the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanities Award given by the State of Israel for outstanding services to humanity, and is a member of the prestigious Texas Business Hall of Fame.
In 2007, he was elected to serve on the board of directors of the United States Chamber of Commerce, and in 2008 received the International Citizen Award from the World Affairs Council of San Antonio. Nixon is past president of the Laredo Chamber of Commerce as well as the Laredo Development Foundation. He is also a founding member of the Association of South Texas Communities and the Alliance for Security and Trade, both bipartisan organizations aimed at bettering South Texas.
“Dennis Nixon is the first Laredoan to receive this award. He lives here, works here, and is a true visionary who has completely revolutionized banking in South Texas,” 2013 Vision Conference Organizing Committee Chairman Ed Ramirez, Jr. said. “We are thrilled that under his leadership, IBC is the largest public company in the city’s history to be headquartered in Laredo.”
