Zapata, Texas - February 24, 2014 - Zapata CEO Renato Ramirez was recognized by the Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association as Mr. South Texas 2014 on Saturday, Feb. 22 at the 63rd Mr. South Texas Luncheon. The Mr. South Texas title is named to a deserving individual who has made a significant and lasting contribution to the growth and development of Laredo and the South Texas region.
“I am honored and appreciative of being named Mr. South Texas 2014,” IBC Bank-Zapata CEO Renato Ramirez said. “I am humbled to join the ranks of so many icons in South Texas and am thankful I have had the opportunity to serve many and make numerous lifelong friendships through my career and service to my community.”
Ramirez, who joined IBC Bank-Zapata in 1984 at its founding, recently celebrated his 30th anniversary with IBC Bank. Prior to joining IBC Bank-Zapata, Ramirez managed foreign loans and taught Finance for many years at The University of Tennessee, Louisiana State University, and Laredo State University. He also served as associate dean of Escuela Bancaria Superior de Centro-America.
Ramirez’s impact on regional development includes generous philanthropic work extending from Zapata to Laredo and across the border into Mexico. He also established scholarship programs at Laredo Community College and funded a $1 million dollar scholarship endowment at Texas A & M International University. He has contributed to the National Hispanic Institute, and made significant donations to the Zapata Boys and Girls Club.
Ramirez led the IBC Bank fundraising efforts for the Tejano Monument, a monument on the south lawn of the Texas capitol honoring the contribution of Texas’ early Spanish American settlers and their descendants. Together, Ramirez and his fundraising committee, consisting of Texas business, community and educational leaders, was instrumental in the monument’s conception, capitalization and completion, raising $1.3 million from private donors.
Together with his Mr. South Texas designation, Ramirez will become a member of Los Caballeros de la Republica del Rio Grande.
