Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)ETFs represent a basket of securities that are traded on an exchange. They are similar to index mutual funds but trade like a stock. Similar to index funds, ETFs track the performance of a particular index (i.e. the S&P 500 known as the "spider") or different sectors, geographic regions, countries and investment styles. Other ETFs track different sectors of the bond market as well as different commodities. Some benefits include:
- Lower expenses than traditional funds
- More tax-efficient than mutual funds
- Can be bought/sold throughout trading day
An investment in Exchange Traded Funds (ETF), structured as a mutual fund or unit investment trust, involves the risk of losing money and should be considered as part of an overall program, not a complete investment program. An investment in ETFs involves additional risks such as not diversified, price volatility, competitive industry pressure, international political and economic developments, possible trading halts, and index tracking errors.
