(MAY 23, 2018) ZAPATA, TEXAS
- IBC Bank-Zapata Chairman of the Board Renato Ramirez helped Sgt. Fidencio Mendoza, a Vietnam War veteran, provide his testimony for The Voces Oral History Project. The research project documents and creates better awareness about the contributions of U.S. Latinos and Latinas of the World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War generations.
"I am proud that a Zapata native was able to step up and contribute to the defense of our country," said Ramirez. "If you read history, you probably will not find much about Latinos. We need to make sure these stories are told and I am thrilled to be able to help Mendoza tell his."
Mendoza served in the Vietnam War for more than a year. He has been recognized for his service with a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze service stars, and a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
"I want to thank Mr. Ramirez for helping me set this up with The Voces Oral History Project," said Mendoza. "I feel a sense of responsibility to bring awareness to the contributions made by Latinos and I am honored for this opportunity."
The Voces Oral History Project will be celebrating its1,000th interview on June 7 at the Mexican American Cultural Center in Austin, Texas.
